“You already have what you need.
Together we will find it.”
Dr. Jorina Elbers

As a holistic integrative neurologist, Dr. Jorina Elbers blends conventional neurology with brain-body therapies aimed at treating the root cause of symptoms, and helping patients access their innate capacity for healing. She works with the nervous system to regulate and rewire maladaptive neural patterns that often underlie or contribute to many physical and mental health issues.

Dr. Elbers is a board-certified neurologist with subspecialty training in pediatric neurology and pediatric stroke. Before joining Santa Cruz Integrative Medicine, she was an assistant professor and practicing neurologist at Stanford. As a clinical researcher, she studied the medical symptoms of chronic stress and trauma. The lack of medical recognition and inadequate treatment of stress-related symptoms motivated her to seek out, learn, and develop effective therapies for these conditions. She is the creator of HeartMath’s trauma-sensitive training course for health professionals, as well as an online course teaching emotional awareness and self-regulation for parents and children.

Dr. Elbers provides specialized treatment for adults and children with a wide variety of difficult-to-treat symptoms including chronic pain, dizziness, sleep problems, unexplained weakness or sensory loss, involuntary movements, and chronic fatigue. Her treatment approach is also effective for patients with post-concussion syndrome, chronic illness, and long COVID. She views chronic stress and trauma through the lens of the nervous system, and therefore also provides effective treatment for anxiety, panic attacks, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Dr. Elbers provides a full clinical assessment and neurological exam on the first visit. Personalized treatment sessions focus on regulating the nervous system, and include a combination of HeartMath, heart rate variability biofeedback, Brainspotting, and stress & lifestyle management.

HeartMath is a scientifically-validated set of techniques and technology that focuses on the neurological connection between the heart and the brain to help manage stress and improve health. HeartMath teaches you how to regulate your nervous system through the practice of simple techniques that both adults and children can learn. Research has shown that regular practice using heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback also improves HRV, a measure of autonomic nervous system function, and a key indicator of emotional and physical health.

Brainspotting is a powerful, brain-body based therapy that helps to resolve stuck emotions, thoughts or body sensations that persist despite talk therapy and other treatments. Brainspotting works by noticing, processing and releasing core sources of emotional pain, body pain, trauma, dissociation and a variety of other challenging symptoms. Brainspotting differs from other trauma therapies in that a traumatic event does not need to be discussed, or even identified, for healing to occur. This makes it an effective approach for processing deep or seemingly inaccessible wounds, even in children and infants.
